What is the MTA retry timeout on your servers?

The retry timeout setting defines how often the MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) will try to deliver messages that cannot be delivered at the first attempt.

SiteGround’s servers use Exim for Mail Transfer Agent. If a mail cannot be delivered at the first attempt, Exim tries to resend the message every 15 minutes for 2 hours. Then the retry intervals are increased, starting at 1 hour and increasing each time by a factor of 1.5, up to 16 hours. Then Exim retries every 8 hours until 4 days have passed since the first failed delivery.

This is the default setting on our servers. It cannot be changed on the shared servers due to their specific setup and security policy. Changing the retry timeout is possible only on our Virtual Private Servers and on our dedicated servers.

Which SMTP port to use?

No matter which SMTP port you use your mails will be sent in exactly the same way.

We recommend using the SMTP port 2525 because the default 25 might be blocked by your local Internet service provider.

More information on how to change the SMTP port for the most popular mail clients (such as Outlook and Thunderbird) can be found in our Email tutorial.

SiteGround’s servers are using state of the art spam protection system with custom ACL filters which will ensure you will avoid the spam and at the same time never miss your important emails. If you wish to have unlimited mail accounts and stable mail service, you may sign up for an account at SiteGround.

My mobile device cannot send mails

This issue is usually caused by the fact that your mobile operator has filtered the outgoing smtp connections.

In order to resolve this please contact your mobile operator and ask them how to use their smtp server.

Error: Invalid HELO

The message “invalid HELO command” means that the application you are using for sending mails does not comply with corresponding RFC standards.
This happens rarely and the only solution is to use another application for sending mails.

IP has been blacklisted by an antispam organization

If you receive a bounced-back message saying that IP address X.X.X.X is blacklisted by a spam organization this means that the fore mentioned IP address has been blacklisted for sending unsolicited mail. Such a listing is caused by a complaint to the spam-fighting organization.

In the bounced-back mail there will be a link for more information and what you can do in this case. If you recognize the reported ip as your local one please read further on how to remove it.

On the other hand if you find this is our server’s shared ip you don’t have to take any actions. We would have been already informed about this issue and taken all necessary actions to remove it from the list.

It might take around 24-48 hours for the removal to be confirmed and you will be able to send your mail without problems

Error: ‘Retry time not reached for any host’

This error message means that a previous attempt to deliver the mail has failed with a temporary error, and the mail server computed the earliest time at which to try again.

Please allow some more time and your message will be delivered.

I receive Unroutable address bounce back error message.

The error “Unroutable address / Unroutable mail domain” is a general error which can be caused by several things:

  • a misspelled email address; for example, you have sent the mail to friend@sitegrond.cominstead of friend@sitegroUnd.com; please check very carefully the spelling of the email address of your recipient and try sending the message again;
  • you have exceeded the maximum number of e-mails allowed to be sent out per hour; in this case you should allow some time for the number of sent messages to be reduced and then resend the mail;
  • the mail server cannot determine the correct route for sending your email message because of a DNS configuration error with the recipient’s MX records; in this case the support for the remote server should be contacted for additional assistance

Cannot send email using TheBat

The most common reasons not to be able to send emails are:

* Wrong TheBat settings;
* Blocked port 25 by the Internet Service provider.

To resolve the problem please try to:

1. Make sure you are using the correct TheBat settings:

* Incoming mail server (POP3/IMAP server): mail.yourdomain.com
* Outgoing mail server (SMTP server): mail.yourdomain.com
* Username: the full e-mail address like email@yourdomain.com
* SMTP authentication must be enabled for the login to be successful.
IMPORTANT: Please do not use secure authentication to your mail server.

A common mistake is to leave My SMTP server requires authentication checkbox unchecked. This option should be always enabled, since SiteGround servers require such authentication.

2. Try using the alternative TCP port 2525 for the smtp server. For more information check this URL:
